So the past couple of weeks have been…well, you decide. It all started when I made some curry meatballs for dinner on a Monday night and the next morning…day…night…and following day Annabelle was introduced to movies. Barrett also ate some of the curried joy the next day for lunch and ended up in the same plight as me…staying close to the porcelain thrown. AC continued to watch Holiday Inn, White Christmas, and the Sound of Music as we curled up in agony praying that the Lord would give us mercy. All this time we had Christmas parties to smile and attend. We did so by the grace of the Lord. Honestly, we started to feel better and eat only on Friday. That is when my head got full with holiday sniffles.
Yes, a full-blown head cold blew my way just as my belly revived. We made it to the Children’s program at church, set up for caroling, and then retreated home so I could empty our house of every available tissue. We attended Christmas Eve service, had a wonderful Christmas morning and then raced to feed Marines at one of the bases for the evening. It was perfect since I looked like Rudolph and Annabelle looked like Cindy Lou Who…then came the final act…
We slept in late and what to our surprise? But a flat tire with no help in sight! So we filled Barrett’s Car to whisk us off for the mail the post office forgot! We returned home after hot coffee and cheer and managed to watch Elf…with his eight tiny reindeer. Barrett flew off to work after changing the tire only for me to discover that the spare too was dire. I walked to the mechanic to tell him my woe…and graciously he cheered he would come and tow…actually, he walked over with another spare so he could drive my car back…that just didn’t rhyme. So with two new front tires (the spare fixed and tucked away…this too didn’t fit the rhythm) and cookies in hand, we waved to our mechanic and shouted Merry Christmas to all, from your number one fan!
So we are on the mend, smiling again and grateful for the blessings of this season even when circumstances come to rob joy. The Lord has been good to us and we are thankful for all our friends and family who have made this season special. I apologize to all grammar gurus and genre folk for mixing narrative, poem, and whatever other literary rule I’ve broken. We hope you had a merry Christmas!
