Yesterday marked my year anniversary of being stateside. Man, what a year it has been. Singled to married, teacher to student, Thai to English, hot to cold weather, old friends to new friends, one family to two, and roommate to caretaker and wife. We’ve had tornados, ice storms, over a foot of snow, 100 degree weather, thunderstorms to boot, and this morning we woke up to a flood in our basement.
So now I sit here in the kitchen writing while Betsy is eating an orange and Barrett is outside with Service Pro trying to see how they are going to pump out our water before the rains fall again this afternoon. All my stuff that has been stored for the past 5 years is now under two feet of brown odorous water (that is still rising). Betsy’s stuff that was saved from her previous flood 30 years ago has also reached the same fate. We lost our furnace, washer and drying, and hot water.
Yet really, its just stuff. I can’t figure out how a foot and a half of water could find a home in our basement in less than 9 hours! But I am thankful that its not worse. There was no fire, no damage to us personally, and we have the means to clean it up. I remember hearing some of the Thai teachers tell me of their houses that were underwater from rainy season. They had to take the water out by their own hands and buckets. All of their life was washed away in the flood. Man, we are so blessed here. To know that we have a sovereign God that is in control is our comfort. Its such a great reminder of what is really important in life.
So despite the hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, lack of water, torrents of water, wind storms, fires, ice storms, extreme heat, flooded basements and whatever else this cursed land brings we have a hope in a new earth where all that matters will be restored. Im so glad that this world is not the epitome of life, we have a hope of eternal life with our Savior.
Well, I’d better check with the flood! Is that a rainbow?
