I sleepily walked down our duskily lit stairs this morning and clumsily grabbed my blue cereal bowl from the wooden drying rack and placed it on the counter…eh, what’s that? I see an old foe scurrying over the blue tiled counter along with his myriad of cohorts…the ants are back! They found the sweetness of our house just too tantalizing to pass up. Let the war begin!
Do you ever have a mundane day or event become a favorite memory? Yesterday started with my normal run and house cleaning and then I got to make a fantastic phone call to the states, which always leaves me feeling jolly and jovial (the thesaurus on these words was just too good to pass up!). Then I had a bacon, egg, and cheese, sandwich as I met with Amanda for our Sat morning breakfast…why should such a common commodity be so exciting? Because bacon, bread and cheese are rare in the land of rice and veggies and having those flavors mix was a blast of flavor and bit of nostalgia!
After the marvelous time with Amanda, I went home and got Sara Jane (SJ) to come with me to meet up with my friend Moody for a day of shopping. Shopping you say? You hate shopping! Yes, but I was being led by a guy and I had a list in my hand and an agenda on the table. Moody is my 6 foot 10 ish, 350 pound (I actually have no idea how much he weighs), grizzly bearded friend who takes pleasure in sharing his knowledge of Thailand, life, and philosophy. He volunteered to show me new places to shop that avoid crowds, have good stuff, and air conditioning as opposed to the narrow, outdoor Thai markets that are swamped with sweaty people with a torrid tourist schedule.
The great thing about Moody is that people remember him…hard not too, the gentle giant that he is! So as we went from pottery shop to cigar stores, to electronic supplies, the owners gave us smiles, stories, and discounts because I was a friend of Moody’s! Sweet! The 3 of us discussed church politics, Thai culture, personality traits, and visiting other countries between our travels by foot, taxi, and sky train. He also helped us avoid the “where do you want to go next?” times by just cutting through the masses of sidewalk wandering people to our next location. I knocked off most of my list before the inevitable hatred of shopping kicked in…just in time for dinner!
We sat at a Mexican restaurant eating oven warmed chips and cool salsa along with our Quesidillas and discussed the high’s and low’s of the week. SJ’s low being part of our shopping day as the mass of people outside the stores made her become homicidal as she put it. But that only added to the humor of the day. A taxi ride home and an enjoyable phone call later, I curled up in my bed exhausted but thankful for the mundane day turned memorable.
